Malá Fatra region has been declared as a National Park on 18th January 1988. The actual area spreads over 22,630 hectares. The protected area is 22,262 hectares. The territory of The National Park Malá Fatra (NPMF) is 23 km long and 13 km wide. Forests cover 70% of the entire area. Malá Fatra which is situated in north – west part of Slovakia has been devided into two parts: KRIVANSKA FATRA with its highest peak Veľký Kriváň – 1709 m.n.m. and LUCANSKA FATRA with its highest peak Veľká Lúka – 1476 m.n.m.
The history of Malá Fatra is full of legends about traditional culture of inhabitants and of brigands’ groups from which the most popular are about Juraj Jánošík and his brigand’s group. National public hero Juraj Jánošík was born on 25th of January 1688 in Terchová village in the family of rich farmer. Supposedly he took the money from leviathans and gave them to the paupers. He is said not to hurt anybody during the rapines ant to hide with his group in the holes and rocks of Malá Fatra, where all the money for paupers were hidden, too. The national hero was finally caught and executed in 1713. On the occasion of 300 anniversary of his death the sculpture in memory of Juraj Jánošík was inaugurated in Terchová village.
In the region of Malá Fatra there is a plenty of water sources and waterfalls – the biggest one is ŠÚTOVSKÝ waterfall with hight of 38 meters. More than 30 mammals, 118 birds and 1000 different insects are living here.
